Phantom Shore
The fog came in thick that morning, swallowing the coastline whole. Lifeguard towers materialized and disappeared at the edge of visibility, reduced to dark silhouettes standing their posts on an empty shore. The sand stretched wide and unpeopled — this was Southern California without its crowds, without its noise, stripped down to something quieter and more elemental. A city of half a million people, and not a soul in sight.
